I'm fascinated by the lace cap hydrangeas, but don't have the space for a large, old-fashioned plant like I see in some gardens. I'd like to find one that ideally wouldn't get any larger than 3-4 feet tall (smaller and bushier would be better!) and wide and can take some mid-day sun. Does anyone have any suggestions? Also, where is the best place to get them? My local nurseries don't seem to have a lot of variety. Are there reputable mail order places?

I don't know off the top of my head which ones would stay the size you want, but for mail order nurseries, here are the ones from Garden Watchdog that say they sell hydrangeas (I sorted them by rating for you, so the better ones will show up first)
