huge maple tree branch major branch has a split!! Help

Can I mend this. My 50yo maple tree has had a split in a major branch. Not at the end but in the middle of it, I can see right through the branch. Last winter during the martin luther king ice storm I am guessing it happened. I just noticed it the other day. Can this branch be saved? The tree creates a umbrella in the back yard and is a wonder refuge from summer sun losing this branch would be a huge loss. IDEAS? HELP??

Wear a hard hat. Seriously, this is serious. Get a professional certified arborist to evaluate ASAP. Safety first, please.
