My media card reader is not working

When I used to go to My Computer the card readers were listed with the other drives. Now I don't see them and they don't work. It worked before, but now is no where to be found listed anywhere to even fix.
I am not sure if that is the correct name I am using. It is the slots on my computer where I can slide the card from my digital and video cameras. Smart media/xd is the one I currently want to use, but the others don't work either.
