Squash problem

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9b)

It's been 110-115F here for 3+ weeks now and I've had to irrigate everyday in order to keep the leaves from wilting terribly. This photo shows what is happening to 95% of my young squash that are about 3 inches long. Is this because of the heat wave and constant watering, or is this normal for most of the young fruit to turn brown on the ends and shrivel? I am growing "Early Prolific Straightneck" & "Delicata" in zone 9b.

That is a classic case of fruit abortion. It is usually caused by lack of pollination although stress can also cause it. I suspect it is a combination in your case as squash fare poorly at high temps. The vine is under extreme stress, the pollinators are hunting some cool shade, and even the pollen can be killed.

Thanks FD,
The forecast says it's going down to about 100 now and the monsoons are kicking in, so maybe I'll get some late fruit this year.
