Widescreen LCD monitors...why?

Las Cruces, NM(Zone 8a)

My 19" CRT monitor appears to be on the way out. Finally, time for one of those nice thin LCD monitors! I'm running Windows XP Home and my computer is about 3 years old, and I figured I could just plug in a new monitor and be good to go.

Looking at Best Buy, most of the monitors available were widescreen LCD monitors. I noticed that the widescreen monitors on display clearly distorted the images shown...in other words, the images appear to be stretched wide to fit the shape of the screen. When viewing a human, the guy on the widescreen monitor looked like he had a fat head; on the few (regular?) monitors on display, he looked normal.

I sure don't want my photos distorted when I view them. I don't understand why anyone would want a widescreen monitor if it distorts images, so there must be something I'm not understanding here. As you can tell, I'm not a sophisticated computer shopper; I only buy something when I have no choice because the old one died.

Can someone explain why widescreen monitors are desirable, if they distort images? If they can be set to not distort images, am I going to have a black bar going down each side of the screen? I don't get it. Thanks for any help!
