how to germinate matilla poppies for midwest bloom?help!!!

i have seen in cali a field of matilla (?) poppies and heard the seeds have to be burned to germinate.. can i do that and when do i do it? id like to try to treat as an annual here in illinois in my dry garden?or am i wishing on a california star?
