Low-sun veggie gardening?

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5a)

Hi all,
I'm looking for suggestions about veggies to grow (next year) in a less-than-full-sun location, and the good folks over in the Veggie forum suggested that I post over here as well. I'm really getting interested in veggie growing, and next year I want to branch out from the tomatoes I've been doing up til now. My garden space is pretty well-defined, and not much I can do about it, so I'm trying to figure out how to work with my space. I've got a raised bed that sits under a large mesquite tree (the one on the right in the pic.). The tree provides lovely filtered light during the summer. I'm having some success with tomatoes under there, although they are noticeably later (and rangier) than my full-sun tomato plants (in the bed on the left).

Do any of you have any ideas about what veggies (other than greens, which can't stand the heat without bolting, shade or no) might work in this site?

I appreciate any and all suggestions--thanks!

this one the good info starts about half way down http://www.reneesgarden.com/articles/shade.html

hope this gives you great ideas.....
I'd even think in the HOT Tucson sun... they'd do better with some shade protection.

my Mom down in Green Valley says she can't grow much at all due to the heat... at least not like she could up here in IL.

I've got swiss chard (the bright lights variety) in the shade here - it will go all summer without bolting in Minnesota, as long as I keep it well watered. Runner beans also do well for me. Peg

My solution is mobile plants! I move them with the sun. The yard is full of birch and oak trees and the soil is simply sand. This year I put pepprs and peas in pots and placed them in sunny spots. Our growing season is short so I give the plants as much opportunity to grow and produce as I can.

That's a great looking raised bed, Jill. One way to beat the caliche!

Someone told me not long ago that bush beans do well in the shade so I'm going to try them next year.

When I lived in Tucson, I didn't grow vegetables, but I had a fig tree in part shade which produced more figs than we could eat or give away.

Hmmm---there's an idea! Love fresh beans, I'll have to give that a go! And I'm already trying to figure out where to put a fig tree. I think I saw somewhere that they'll do okay in a big container, so that might be what I do. MMMM.... figs... :)
Thanks, Don!
