Need Help: Can't defragment

A message comes up saying:
Drive C has been locked by disk ulitily,may have to be unlocked to defragment.Would someone please tell me what this means & how to unlock a ulitily.How do I find out what ulitily is locked? I don't even know what a ulitily is much less how or why it is locked. Thank you for any help.
