Is there such a thing as fall onions for those of us in the Intermediate day-length area?
I was traveling this spring and didn't get my onions in. Now it is past the solstice and i wonder if there is an onion that will make a bulb between now and winter. I know it is possible to raise green onions, but what about bulbing onions? I really miss mine.
Fall onions?
I have no idea. I have planted winter ( short day ) onions and spring onions (long day) but in each case the bulbing was accompanied by increasing daylenght. Whether any will bulb on decreasing daylenght, I just don't know. If I were going to experiment I think I would try a day neutral cultivar.
I think that is what I will do. I know walla walla will grow here and keep over the winter and make big bulbs in the spring. Don't know if they will make bulbs in the fall though. In the meantime, some of them could serve as green onions. I will also experiment with a day neutral onion.
