Help! with squash blossoms

My patty pan squash blossoms look like someone is taking a pair of scissors and cutting them off the vine. The flowers are not yet withered. I know Farmer Dill said in another thread some of the older varieties had male flowers appear first which did not set fruit - is this what is happening or is it something else?
