Friendly feathered fellows

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

Hello all.
Just got back from my little holiday in Costa Rica & Panama. We were sailing the Pacific coast and encountered some of the friendliest Pelicans I've ever seen. I have four photos of them. ...for those of you who are fond of these goofy birds. I love 'em.
Here's one. This fellow just plopped down on the rail of the ship and sat there posing for about 15 minutes.

And this one, sat airing himself out on the bowsprit for a while....

And while I'm here. Anyone know this bird? I thought it was an Oystercatcher, but it's not quite the same as the one in my North American field guide. This onw was in Panama.
Thanks,
Deb

Pelle: It was fun. Didn't see as many birds as I had hoped, but that just gives me a reason to go back!

It's a regular old American Oystercatcher

Ned: So I should stick with my first impulse then! :) Thanks for the help.

Great photos - what a treat to see such a friendly, fascinating bird!!! And the oystercatcher is pretty cool, too!

We have similar experience with pelicans in Cabo San Lucas. After returning from fishing, they are after leftover bait. The first mate puts on a show by tossing the bait up in the air. Cracks me up every time.

And here they steal from the live bait well.

And lastly, a nice close look at this pretty one.

Mrs. Ed: Love your pics. They are such awkward looking birds, but so graceful at the same time. I swear they like to pose for photos!
