I have found a good home for the irises that are crowding my small garden. How soon can I dig them. I live in south Louisiana.

Generally, you buy them from the nurseries in August and September so that must the best time to transplant them. In your hot climate, I'd wait until September or even October.
But if you order new ones from on-line catalogs, you'd better your order in ASAP.
