I saw this in my local nursury and loved the contrast betwen the leaves and blooms. Does anyone know if it can be trained to be more tree like than a many stemmed shrub?

Yes, I have had many crepe myrtles and you can do it. It does take attention the first few years. They really want to be shrubs. I don't think I have had that variety, but I assume they are all similar.
