Still have some irises....

McGregor, IA(Zone 4b)

But it is going to be survival of the fittest around here.
I don't know what is wrong with me, but I couldn't get myself to buy any Merit when the time was right to use it this spring...So I am again inspecting all irises and digging any that look rotty or holey...I found 2 borers. 1 just itty bitty. But I am noticing that there is sometimes a little pile of tan colored thingys right under the rotten rhizomes...Assume they are the empty egg cases for the larvae. One dead rhizome with these leavings had an iris borer starting to feed gluttonously on the nearest succulent iris. The new bed that I dug last year seems pretty free of problems so far. Maybe it is a good idea to move them around to new beds frequently. Crop rotation. I think that's what I will do with any that I dig and bleach this year - move them to a new spot.
Well, I won't expect any sympathy or advice from anyone here this year, but it is going to be tough love this year. If it is another bad borer year, I will have to buy some Merit in the fall, so I will have it handy next spring...
