peat moss

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

um, here's a silly question, but searching the forums is taking forever and leading me astray.

what do you do with peat moss?

some plants i bought were shipped in it, and now i have a nice little box full that i feel like i should use... i keep reading it helps soil retain moisture - but are you supposed to mix it in, or put it on top? i do have very sandy soil here.

help?

there's 2 kinds of peat, the shredded kind you use to mix in soil or as a mulch and sphagnum the milled form that's used as decoration. That's about the extent of my knowledge on that, I hope it helps some.

For soil use, working in peat moss in the top foot of the soil is helpful. It doesn't contain any nutrients, but will help hold water and nutrients in.

once is wet is great and soft... I have tons of peat moss on the new raised beds... it's considered a soil ammendment I think!!!!
