What do you think ... do the disfigured leaves look to be an insect or soil problem?

Looks like thrips damage. As they suck the juices from the cells, the expanding leaf can't grow at that point and becomes distorted. Do you have any discolored cells within the leaves? How about little black dots on the undersides of the leaves? They are very tiny and hard to see with the naked eye.
