Due to the crazy weather this spring, my spring crop of garden peas didn't produce too much. I thought about putting in a late crop of peas in August, but would they germinate/grow well when the daytime temps are in the 90s? Should I wait until September or just try again next Spring? Any advice would be much appreciated.
Planning ahead: should I plant a late crop of garden peas?
amarettonc, our weather sure has been a bit on the weird side, eh?
Usually you would plant a Fall crop of garden peas about 10 weeks before the first frost day (that would be around August 22 this year, based on October 31 frost date). However, with the warmer weather we've been having perhaps you could wait an extra couple weeks to sow, eh?
By the way, the pea seeds will germinate best if you sow them, soak the ground well, and then cover slightly with mulch to keep the ground moist (unless you are growing acres of them, then just sow deeply).
Also, at that planting time in our area you can sow another crop of summer squash if you like (zuchinni, yellow, etc).
Hope this is helpful!
Shoe.
