A hosta question

(Zone 4a)

I know hostas can be grown in shade but can they tolerate full sun. I have one I would like to dig up and give to a friend but she only has full sun. TIA.

Hillsdale, NY(Zone 5b)

I have a couple of hosta - medium green, light "quilting" and no variegation - here in full sun, and in July and August they get some scalding on the leaves. Maybe further north, they would be okay. In reading the catalog descriptions, some have leaves with more "substance" and do better in full sun.

I'd say it's worth a try, especially if your friend can keep the hosta well-watered during hot, sunny weather.

I think the book answer would be "no" although they have come out with a few that take "more" sun. But like Julie said, what's the worst that could happen?

Forget about trying any blue ones or variegated ones that have a lot of white or yellow. They will fry.
