Two questions about alternative power

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

My partner and I have been talking about alternative power solutions. I figured DG was a good place to start. We are interested in solar power, especially for hot water but we live in south Texas, lots of heat, not always sunny(more cloudy days than sunny according to weather data).
He also wants a wind generator. We do have wind, every day. About an hour after sunrise till after sunset we have light breeze most days and strong breeze lots of days.
Where do we start? I haven't seen more than a couple of solar units here and no wind generators this far south.
