Need name of a type of landscaping stones for my garden

Bayport, MN

I am planning a rain garden. In one of my gardening books, I saw an example where the stones in the "stream" were a dark-colored flat oval rock that was a beautiful contrast to the larger stones. My local stone dealer has a similar, larger variety (six to twelve inches long) in colored stones they have apptly labeled, "Pancake Rock".

The stones I want are two to six inches in length; flatish ovals, in black or dark gray. The only place I have seen anything similar is on the shores of Lake Superior in northern Minnesota.

So, can anyone tell me the names of these stones and if they can be purchased by the cubic yard anywhere in the US? Looked all over the internet but can't find a photo.
