June Bug Damage?

My son and DIL called me yesterday, and said that June bugs had stripped the foliage from their snap peas and newly sprouted bush beans.

I've never heard of this before!!

I'd appreciate hearing opinions on this. They also said they checked it out on-line, and that it is not uncommon.

I e-mailed them this morning-asked DIL to send me the link, so I can post it here.

Any thoughts, or experiences like this?

Thanks, Sasha

June Bugs (Cotinus nitida) more correctly called June beetles are not the likely culprit. They do some damage but primarily to fruits like blackberries and grapes. They like sugar. The larvae are root eaters and can play havor with grasses and row crops. http://www.hiltonpond.org/ThisWeek020708.html http://www.ivyhall.district96.k12.il.us/4th/kkhp/1insects/junebeetle.html

I f the foliage is being stripped, I suspect the Japanese beetle (Popillia japonica), a major pest, which looks like a miniature June Beetle. http://www.pueblo.gsa.gov/cic_text/housing/japanese-beetle/jbeetle.html
