Does anyone know what this is? It's been growing in the same spot outside a Pennsylvania farmhouse since at least 1920 and probably back into the 1800's. The rhizome/root is very fibery (fiberous?) and has to be sawed apart. Inside the flesh is pink.
Thanks for any info.

Do you know me????
Hello:Neil it looks like it might be a yellow water iris. It looks alot like the ones I have that should be blooming in a week here.
That is Iris pseudacorus, commonly referred to as yellow flag. It is on the banned plant list of a number of states because of the devastating effects it has on natural waterways and native flora.

Thanks, Laurie-
Guess that explains why it's survived on total neglect all these years...... still, a clump in full bloom is very attractive.

Indeed it is a lovely thug, which is probably why it was allowed to invade so many wetlands before government officials got wise to its effects on native habitats.
