STEM BORERS??????? HELP!

Fredericktown, MO

Please help! I have a natural patch of truly wild Echinacea. Every night something is getting them. I go out to brown stems about halfway up and the almost ready to bloom stem is done for. I have cut off the stems and looked for borers, but nothing.....Can anyone help?

Just for the heck of it can you dig up one plant that is affected and post a photograph of the roots?

Do you have any grasshoppers or leafhoppers around that you've noticed?

I have seen some little leaf hoppers. Can they do that much damage?

I'd hate to dig them up as they are growing wild in this little patch and have been since we've moved here...........I can!

Say Lisa, why don't you post photos of the damage to your plants and hold off digging one up for now. I have a little voice that tells me to ask you to see the roots though. I don't know why, I just do.

Go online and see if you can find any photos of damage to Echinacea by leafhoppers. Maybe that will give you a starting point without having to dig up a plant.
