Growing clematis in containers

Stafford Springs, CT

Hello All...

I am in zone 5, and am going to try growing clematis in 2 large containers, with trellis in each.

I have seen some fabulous photos of autumn clematis, and want to try that variety in the containers....have seen posts on this site re: the variety, and how vigorous and profuse it can become.... I am wondering if anyone has tried autumn clematis in containers, or if there are those of you that would know it simply wouldn't be a good choice...??

Thanks for your help!

Hi Janice,

There are so many shorter Clematis varieties that are perfect for growing in 18" wide & deep containers. However, Sweet Autumn Clematis is NOT one of them! It grow to about 30ft in length, reseeds proflically and it is considered a thug in many areass. Instead, I would grow any Clematis vine that falls in the 4-7ft category. Those as meant for containers, as well as, Ray Evison's new "patio collection".

Here are a couple of links that will help you:

Here is another person to warn you about Sweet Autumn Clematis...especially in a container! That plant becomes immense and it has a plan, to take over the world (and it might become true)

Well, at least the world would smell nice. :)

Well..that is one way to look at it!

Thank you all for for your input......!

Anytime I've seen this pictured it's as a 'bower' of green and blossoms, which, somehow, I felt I could 'bonsai' into behaving...!!

I'm going to try something more manageable(thanks for the links, Shirley!)
