How to plant Dutch Iris bulbs ?

Claremore, OK(Zone 6a)

I found a great price on bagged Dutch Iris bulbs that are being clearanced at Wal-Mart.
I really don't know much about proper planting of them though.

They don't look like rhizomes, ...... they are little bulbs. Is there a special way to plant these to insure blooms for next spring ? I think it may be too late for this year, but that's ok. I got them at a nice price, so it's still worth the wait. If I plant them this year, will they take hold and strengthen for next year, or will they just rot away ?

I know that rhizomes have to be planted above the soil.............. so, are there any special planting instructions for these ?

Also, do they multiply and need dividing every so many years ? I hope they do. I would like to hear from some of you who grow them.

I've bought a lot of spring bulbs on sale like this in the past, burried them, and that was the last I saw of them. I'm about to decide that they must grow little legs instead of roots, and run off down some secret underground escape tunnel.

See ? I told you I didn't know much about planting these. LOL

4-6in. they are blooming now. I planted quite a few last fall, but either some of them rotted
or the mice ate some bulbs. only a few have bloomed. they are suppose to multiply, But if the mice are eating them I wish they would eat some of my rhizome irises because they are crowded. I don't think they need divided near as often as rhizome iris'.

That's what I was afraid of. I have bought a lot of spring bulbs, only to get very few blooms, if any. And then they just go away, never to return again.

I never thought about it being mice. Maybe that's it. Little mice called voles ate more of our vegetable garden last year, than we did. There wasn't much we could do about them in the veg. garden because we wanted it to be organic. But I don't really have a problem with putting mouse/rat posion around the flower beds.

Thanks Len123, maybe there is hope after all.

There is such a thing as a mole trap. It ought to work on voles as well. It is sort of a gruesome looking thing, but I gather they work.
