Hi! I know this is an odd topic for this forum, but there are cottage gardeners all over the south, so I thought I would ask.
Here is my situation. I really am falling in love with my gardens - and I don't want to go away in August to go camping with family. This year it is unavoidable. And I cannot ask DH to not have a vacation.
However, it occurs to me that I have almost a month off between mid-Dec. and Jan. 20. So, if I plan things correctly, we could go camping someplace in the south, and I woud be able to spend spring, summer, and fall with my gardens!
Okay, we have an old truck with a camper (rides on the bed of the truck). We are not looking for fashionable resorts, or KOA. Ideally, we would stay at a lovely (and safe) state park camping ground where it is reasonably warm. The key is safe - I don't want to be camping where there are a bunch of drunken yahoos - or where I have to wear a bullet-proof vest.
Someplace in a forest, perhaps with a lake near by . . . As far as facilities are concerned, we are used to "roughing it." e.g. pit toilets are okay.
do you know of areas you would recommend we seek out?
thanks in advance,
Seandor
Camping in the winter?
Not Tennessee! Look further south, unless you have a good heater in your camper. What about the Gulf Coast?
Gosh, it was in the 70's here in the MD/DC/VA area until early January '07, so if we have another year like that, you could camp just West of DC, in the mountainous parks there(?). There are several scenic camping areas (rustic) out there. http://www.nps.gov/shen/
thanks, wrightie, I book marked the link.
Pagancat, the camper is even older than the truck! But it comes with a very good propane furnace, stove, and fridge.
I think DH would prefer to not have to run the furnace, however :-)
Not for winter, but for future reference, the Pipestone Resort State Park in WV was our very fave camping trip.
Here are a couple of links to FLA and GA. I didn't check Mississippi or Alabama or South Carolina, and I believe to be perfectly safe at that time of year in terms of temperature, that you need to plan for the middle of Florida.

thanks, Suzy. I am from British Columbia, currently living in Massachusetts - so I have no idea whether I want central Florida - or what. I have bookmarked both links and we will definitely check out Pipestone Resort State Park.
