Aristolochia seedlings

Dover, NJ

Hello all,

Last week 3 of my Aristolochia grandiflora seeds finally sprouted (actually they only took 3 weeks). All 3 popped out with their seed coats still on (see pic below). I didn't know if it was advisable, but I went ahead and pried off the seed coats. The cotyledons got their tips burned from the bright plant light, but it looks like all 3 are going to make it.

Here's what they look like now:

Then a few days ago, one of my Aristolochia "Itarana" seeds started to sprout.

Woo Hoo!!!

I hope it doesn't come out with its seed coat still one, cause the seeds are fairly small.

Here's a link that shows what it will look like when it blooms--hopefully it will make it.

Congratulations Mark! A. grandiflora is a stunning - and relatively easy - vine to grow. The flowers are out of this world. I've never grown A. 'Itarana' before, but it looks cool, and I look forward to seeing your pictures.

Good luck to you.
