Rooting cuttings ..... ? Does it work ?

Is it possible to root cuttings from Clematis ? If so.... is it a difficult task ? I know that a lot of plants will root that way, but are so difficult to do, an amateur would be disappointed if they tried. I've tried roses with no luck, so if it's harder than that................maybe it wouldn't be for me. :) I dearly love the clematis pictures that have been posted. Thanks for sharing.

My propagation book claims you can. But looks like the easiest method is layering.
take a shoot dig a lttle4-6 in deep use a heavy metal u shaped wire to hold it in hole,
replace soil, firm tie end of shoot to a vertical stick and tie. check back next spring to see if rooted. you bury the leafless part of the stem and the leaved end u tie up on stake
you can even serpentine layer to get more cuttings off from same shoot.
do the same thing but between each leaf section put in holes wired down and bury only you put a little cut or wound in the sten where u bury it, but do not bury the end of the shoot.

Some will root in water.

I'm new to this forum and have only been growing clematis for a couple of years. I am so inspired by all your beautiful pictures and have learned so much just by reading through all the all threads. This certainly is an addicting plant.

My Multiblue actually layered itself over the winter. I was so thrilled to see I have an entire new plant growing. It has stems about a foot long already. How long should I leave it where it is before I can relocate it?

Thank you for the info. I may get nerve enough to try it.
