Huge gardenia (6' tall, nearly 10' across) came with my old house. It's growing in the middle of the back lawn in full sun, and blooms like crazy every year. But the blossoms have no fragrance! Is this an odd cultivar, or is it maybe malnourished in some way?
fragrance-free gardenia?
Are you absolutely positive it's a gardenia? I've never heard of an unscented one, and if it's malnourished it wouldn't affect the scent, it would decrease the amount of blooms
I think so. The photo here I took this afternoon. When it's blooming, the blossoms look like the photo of "gardenia, Cape Jasmine" in davesgarden plant files referenced below. (I tried to figure out how to put a live link here, but it's beyond me at the moment.)

It does look like a gardenia (would have to see the blooms to be sure though), have to say I've never heard of one that's not fragrant though, perhaps it's some mutation that arises occasionally but isn't propagated and developed on purpose for obvious reasons.
