Great Nursery for Clematis Plants!

Raleigh, NC

I ordered two clematis plants last week from two different nurseries. The
clematis from Bushwood Nursery was so healthy and green. I couldn't have
gotten a healthier plant from a local nursery. Wish I could say the same for
the shape of the clematis from the other nursery.

Brushwood is a very good nursery. You should also check out Silverstar Vinery.

I hope you'll also post feedback in the Watchdog - here's Brushwood's entry: http://davesgarden.com/gwd/c/534/

If you ordered from other places, be sure to leave feedback for each of them - what you know helps others!

I buy mine from Debbie at Silver Star Vinery...you got to try hers...the roots are huge..plus Debbie will answer any of your questions!!!

I wanted to get Little Nell from Brushwood and I emailed as to when it would be available. They answered back almost immediately which impressed me. I will definitely order from them. Little Nell won't be available til fall(sigh) but they have a lot of other nice ones and the prices are very affordable.

Debbie at Silver Star is great also. I'm getting my second order from her next week.

Thanks for the info on Silverstar Vinery. I'll check out their website.

The other nursery was Wayside Gardens.

Dillon, SC(Zone 7b)

I also ordered one from Wayside this spring, along with some roses for groundcover. The roses were O.K., but the clematis was so small I almost MISSED it when I removed the roses from the box. It will take at least 2 years of growing in a pot before I can plant it! For $10.00+ I could have done better at Walmart!

Brushwood is wonderul! I have gotten several nice vines and climbing roses there. Silver Star Vinery is also amazing (my clematis nursery of choice). I love shopping with smaller specialty nurseries and knowing that I am not giving my money to some faceless corporation that doesn't give two hoots for the plants they sell. Enjoy your new plants!

rosethyme and irishbelle, thanks for your recommendation re. Silver Star Vinery. I just ordered Jackmanii and John Huxtable from them. Will also check out Brushwood. Am consulting the ICS list for beginners since I've never had much success with clematis. Never knew until joining DG that you need to match your growing conditions with the choice of plant. Am hoping that by choosing the easier-to-grow plants I'll have better success! Has anyone in 7b ever tried Triternata Rubromarginata or Warwickshire?

No, Sos 210-14, but I want to. I think the Triternata Rubromarginata is supposed to be very fragrant. I'm a beginner also and really like John Huxtable and Roko Kolla. I was told to stay away from the Alpinas because it gets so blasted hot here in Texas.

Saint Clair Shores, MI(Zone 6b)

I'm in 6b and I have Triternata Rubromarginata.

It is now only going into its second year, but it is already pushing growth and the cold snap didn't even bother it.

The blooms were sparse last year, but they are fragrant (I had to get close to tell, but there were no more than 3-5 at a time last year.) This year it should be better, but next year...Watch out.

The warnings about giving it well drained soil (this one moreso than most) are to be heeded as I killed one previously when it drowned.

I've got clematis I got from Wayside 4 years ago and they are just now approching the size you get from Debbie at Silver Star for almost the same price. She's the first place I go to get clematis now. I haven't ordered from Brushwood, but would if Debbie couldn't get what I want.

I have a Triternata Rubromarginata in its 2nd or creep year. It is suppose to be a vigorous grower with a nutmeg scent.
