How much flax seed?

This is my first time giving my draft horse and two minis flax seed for spring shed. How much is enough? The draft is around 1600#, the minis run around 200# ea, weight-wise.

Thx!

P.S. Oh, yeah, and if I accidently spilled some of this seed on the ground would it grow? Would the green plant be safe for the horses to eat?
