Thanks. Though I grow lots of tomatoes, and keep looking for them, I've never seen a tomato hornworm, but your identification might be a different bug. Or did I misunderstand?

It is probably a moth pupa of some kind, maybe a sphinx moth, maybe an underwing moth or something else. Here's a bunch of 'em if you want to take a look, but many are pretty similar:

The sphinx moth and tomato hornworm are two views of the same character!
I think they are both lovely. The hornworm I had last summer was such a cutie. He would just freeze in position if strangers came to close. Guess he knew I wasn't going to both him. There were plenty of leaves for him to munch without me missing them and he never bothered the fruit. The sphinx moths are so beautiful to watch as they hover like hummingbirds over the flowers.

Tomato Hornworm Moths are one of many Sphinx moths. The larvae are pretty variable and hard to tell apart sometimes, the pupae are even more so. dun1kirk, maybe you can keep an eye on it and see what it is.
