Clematis "Blue Light"
Stars in my Garden 04/03/2007
They are all beautiful but I really like Crystal Fountain!
oh my favorite is definitely Clematis "Daniel Deronda" and Rosa "Belinda's Dream" - they are delicious together!
Ah hem, Jeanne - how many clematis do you have?
Jeanne, Beautiful as always. Well it is offical , we are expecting hard freezes three nights in a row. Pease wish warmth my way. All my beauties are still in bud and the weather is really keeping me on edge.
warm warm warm andrews - it got cold here last night, too.
Tootsie..I stopped counting at 65..LOL..just too depressing to admit it by saying it outloud or typing the number..one day, after one of my strongest Clematis Anonymous Meetings I might have the courage to do it!!
Gl..I sure hope the weather isn't as bad as they are predicting for you and others!!..Here's wishing you well..thanks yall...Jeanne
OOOooopppss..did I mention that I planted two more climbing roses and 4 more clematis!!?..what a naughty girl I've been!
Where do you pu them all Jeanne? I have to sneak 4 more in tonight.
Jeanne, do you get the majority of your plants from one place - or all over? Just wondering, typically I see the same varieties in the stores. Al's Garden Center usually has some different varieties - but I was thinking about ordering from Brushwood Nursery... please give your input. Thanks!
In every nook and Cranny I can find!!..I've created so many beds to incorporate them..it's truly a sickness!! There are so many Japanese cultivars I want..if I live long enough to see them come to the USA..I am wondering where I'd put them
Tootsie..I have bought tons from Lowe's, Debbie at Silver Star , Dan at Brushwood and Chad over at Gardencrossings.com and Chalkhill..the reason I order so many online is the exact reason you are referring to..Local places carry the same ole staples in the Garden..for the hard to find ones you must order online!! Living in Oregon..there must be several HUGE clematis Nurseries within driving range??..Jeanne
well, I just started 2 years ago (with the basic ones you find everywhere) so this year I am on the lookout for different varieties. - Now I'm hooked, that first year, of course there was not much to look out. .. Our backyard is wide but not very deep, so the vines on the fence really help make it look deeper.
To begin..I would definitely start by check out

pruning group 3's are the easiest for beginners..less stress on their master from freaking out on wilt that the pruning group2's Might get...Jeanne
Joy Creek is in Oregon..how far are you from Maurice in Scappoose, OR ??..

Jeanne,
I love my Blue Light, for so many reasons. But for years now I've been confused because mine doesn't look like ANY of the photos, either in PF or vendor's. At 1st I just figured it probably had 2 "looks", one for beginning of season, one for end of season, as so many dbl clematis do. Anyhow, mine looks exactly like yours! Have you ever noticed the difference between yours and the photos?
Scutler...I just planted mine last fall..and the blooms on baby clematis are not always like the ones on a Mature plant...I think this is the "Single" form look they have on new vines and most probaby will look more like the double on old vines....Jeanne
The Blue Light one has got to be one of the prettiest blue colours I have ever seen from your photo. Gosh I am so envious of all your clematis. I have a small yard but so far I have about 6 myself. At least I know who to turn to when I need help and YES I will need help since this will be my second year gardening so I hope you don't mind all the questions hehee.
Jeanne,
Thanks. I bought mine as a tiny, bare root plant, single stem about 4-5 years ago. It is blooming now for its 4th year. It has multiple vines/stems over 6ft long. The flowers are huge, maybe 7-8" D. It blooms med heavy almost all summer despite the fact that it is in shade almost all day. Still the flowers have always looked like the one below. I'm wondering how long it will take to mature.
Actually, I have mixed feelings on this issue. I like the look shown in all of official photos of Blue Light, but I also like this look. I think the light green center and pale green tips are beautiful with the pale blue flower. I'd almost prefer they WERE 2 different plants.
Thanks again. You have many lovely clematis.
Dawn..anytime hon..that is why we are all hear..to learn and share experiences!!..You'll end up with more than 6..that I promise you as they are the most addictive plants I have ever grown besides roses!!
Scutler...brave you..growing from bareroot..I have one that I grew from bare root and they take longer than any to mature..will be interesting to see how long before I end up with doubles....thanks yall..glad you enjoyed...Jeanne
Wow scutler I love your picture and the way the green just seems to stand out; great picture shot!!!
Ditto regarding your pic Scutler!
Jeanne: I'm amazed how many you have blooming already! I only have one blooming. The others are just forming buds now. (I only have 3. ;-> ) Since you have "a few" clematis, maybe you can suggest one for me. I want to put one against an east-facing brick wall, in with a yellow climbing rose. Any ideas on which might be best? (Sun til 1pm at best.)
Deb
Thanks Deb..most definitely a pruning group 3 would be my recommendation!!..What color do you like..I have a Red one growing with my Climbing Rosa "Teasing Georgia" named Clematis "Barbara Harrington...I also have my fav growing with Climbing rosa "Crespuscle"...Clematis "Ville de Lyon"..she is edged in red with a pink center....I think she is stunning with either yellow or Apricot Roses...
Here is my "Ville de Lyon"

Hey Jeanne
Do you by chance keep a DG diary with all your clematis pictures? It would be cool to see all the different varieties you have; I know you have lots and lots . . . Prettiest ones I've ever seen!!!!
Jeanne: Those are both great choices. Love Barbara Harrington!
I really had pictured a blue with the yellow rose; any blue faves? ...that wouldn't need afternoon sun, of course.
Deb
Phughes..you are welcome to look at my journal..I have my plants listed there..not all of them..am still updating and adding!!

Debbie..I have a blue called "William Kennett" on one side of my arbor with Teasing Georgia..but he is very slow to get established...and is a pruning group 2..."Betty Corning" is a sweet violet blue nodding one!!
Here is my "Teasing Georgia" and "William Kennett" ..Mind you "William" is a couple weeks old and has faded..he is a much darker blue
Jeanne
Jeanne: Thank you so much for the suggestions. I'll look 'em up. :)
