I have no clue about orchids. They had a wonderful outdoor display in the Hawaiian botanical gardens with all these beautiful orchids we just can't grow outside in California... so I thought I'd show some of them and see if anyone could specifically identify any (none were labeled, alas).
Orchids growing outdoors in Hawaii
wow...all I can say is...wow
Very nice palmbob, thanks for posting. Many have somewhat familiar faces to me.
Ken
Yes, they are very beautiful!! Thank you for posting. I will take a closer look at the names, at least a few of them.
I believe I have:
#1 Bllra. Peggy Ruth Carpenter
#2 Mtssa. Charles M Fitch 'Izumi'
The rest I only know the genus for most, although one looks like Todd's Howard's Dream.
Ok.... I ran through several pages of Orchidaceae to figure out what your abbreviations stand for (i know NOTHING about orchids) and figured the latter was miltoniopsis... right? But I still can't figure out what Bllra. stands for.
I brought an orchid back from Hawaii to SoCal and it lived and grew outside for years, just never bloomed again :(
It went with the house when I sold it.
Oh sorry! Beallara (Brassia x Cochlioda x Miltonia x Odontoglossum) and Miltassia (Miltonia x Brassia hybrid).
Wow! 4 different genera... is that considered then a man-made creation? None of these in nature? Guess this might be routine in the Orchid world, but even crossing two genera is rare in my small plant world.
Oh yes. Sometimes two species cross naturally but most of the orchids of today are hybridized. If you go to websites the categories are often HYBRIDS or SPECIES. I often go for the species-but that's true of all the flowers I grow.
