Eucalyptus Species

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

Howdy Y'all, from South Carolina! One of my clients discovered I was a gardener and went nuts on JL Hudson Seeds and bought 7 different types of seeds and asked me to start them for her. She wants to gift her friends with plants. I've been trying to find information about the different varieties, like water requirements, sun/shade, height, width, etc.etc. to put on a tag. Could some one direct me to a site that describes Eucalyptus species?

Here is a list of the seeds:

Eucalyptus burdettiana - Burdetts Malee
Eucalyptus cinerea - Silver Dollar Gum
Eucalyptus gillii - Curly Mallee
Eucalyptus globules - Tasmanian Blue Gum
Eucalyptus landsdowneana v albopurpurea - Crimson Mallee
Eucalyptus nutana - Nodding Gum
Eucalyptus salubria v glauca - Silver Topped Gimlet

I was in awe of how tiny some of the seeds were, like dust. I planted them last weekend and some are already coming up!

Thanks

Does your client friend realise how BIG gums grow ? They will take up a lot of room in a suburban garden ,(they are beautiful though -especially the silver dollar )

I don't think she has a clue as to how big! I tried googling and can only find 1 or two species .. I hoped there was a site devoted only to Eucalyptus.

I have books:
Field Guide to Eucalypts, volumes 1 and 2 by Brooker and Kleinig
that cover most of the Eucalypts, so I looked up each of your species.

You have a few small spelling mistakes, the correct names are:

Eucalyptus burdettiana - Burdetts Mallee
Eucalyptus cinerea - Silver Dollar Gum
Eucalyptus gillii - Curly Mallee
Eucalyptus globulus - Tasmanian Blue Gum
Eucalyptus landsdowneana subsp. albopurpurea - Crimson Mallee
Eucalyptus nutans - Nodding Gum
Eucalyptus salubris var. glauca - Silver Topped Gimlet

Four of these are what are called Mallees:
Eucalyptus burdettiana, Eucalyptus gillii, Eucalyptus landsdowneana var. albopurpurea and Eucalyptus salubris subsp. glauca

A Mallee is a Euvalypt with a growth habit in which several stems arise from an underground woody stock ( a swollen ligno-tuber) and bear a rather open umbrella-like crown.
The Mallee habit seems to be a response to drout and to fire, and without these stresses, the tree may develop as a single stemmed tree.

I will provide more detailed information on the individual species in a dmail,

Kennedy
