Plant A Row for Hunger

Rockford, IL(Zone 5a)

Last year, I heard about this "Plant-A-Row for Hunger" at a community garden seminar in my hometown. I thought it's an excellent idea to reach out and give back to the community by doing something you loved to do such as gardening!

Here's the link to learn more about this program and perhaps your community will make a section for this worthy charitable to your local food pantry for the homeless and poor.

We have about 1/3 of an acre planted as a Food Forest for the local food bank at our community garden. In addition, we had members volunteer to collect crop donations from each of the allotment owners.

Columbus, OH(Zone 6a)

Plant a row for the hungry is one of the requirements of our community garden and we supply the "plant a row" stakes to the gardeners. We also offer garden plots and "grants" of bedding plants and seeds free of charge to families in financial distress and require that they volunteer in the communal areas of the garden as their fee. Our communal areas supply produce to soup kitchens and food banks, as well as to farmer's markets to give us the cash flow necessary to continue our free programs.

Thanks for letting us know about that. In the Bay Area we have something similar, but different. Village Harvest http://villageharvest.org/
