I took my trip to Fairweather this past Saturday. Anybody thinking about ordering from them, DO IT. Their stock is very healthy and well cared for. The clematis have big fat leaf buds already (two jumped in my wagon, Francis Rivis and Brunette) There are about ten or twelve greenhouses, but I only saw a couple of items that are not listed in their catalogue, so going there vs. mail order is just a question of how much time you have on your hands. But they are not a large nursery, so if you see something you want order now!! At least one item sold out while I was there. I did happen to notice the license plates, NJ, PA, MD, Delaware and one from VA. A couple of Camellias also jumped in my wagon. I know nothing about camellias. I guess I'll learn.

WOW..their prices aren't bad...I noticed they are in FULL GALLONS..how were the root systems on their clematis??..I bet shipping full gallons are costly....let us know...Jeanne
venu209: Sounds like you had a fun and very productive road trip to Fairweather Gardens! I'm looking forward to seeing pictures of your blooming plants soon.
Jeanne: Shipping is currently $8.60 for a rectangular Priority box which should hold 2 one gallon Clematis wrapped in wet newspaper. Yes, the foliage will need to be cut back to fit in the box, but it will recover very quickly. I heard on the radio today that the U.S. Postal Service is increasing their prices again, which will go into effective May 1st!
Thanks Shirley...so I assume you have ordered from them and was pleased with their clematis??..Jeanne
Jeanne, I'm still waiting for all the ice to thaw so I can plant them. But they did not look they were recently potted up, so I think their root system should be large. It was a nice trip, interesting that south Jersey has nursery after nursery. Wholesale only though, Drat!!
Isn't New Jersey known as the "Garden State?" Years ago my nephew played in a college bowl game there called the Garden State Bowl...
You are absolutely correct Ticker, although the garden areas seem to be shrinking while the metro areas are growing :(
venu: Would you please take a picture & post it of the Clematis you just purchased from Fairweather Gardens. I've never ordered from them and I'm especially interested in seeing the size of their rootballs.
Isn't South Jersey's soil especially good for growing plants? Perhaps that's why a lot of nurseries are located in that part of the state.
I sure will Shirley. I'll get it tomorrow or Saturday depending on rain. Gotta run out on business right now :(
Thanks venu! I'm looking forward to seeing your 'newest treasures'.
