Ornamental tree ideas

Coeur D Alene, ID(Zone 5a)

We are building a balcony (about 10 feet off the ground) and would like to plant some smaller tree or shrub in the large containers we will build on the deck. I live in zone 5. It is south facing. Would Japanese maples survive in this more exposed area? What other trees or shrubs can you think of that would look interesting but do well in containers? Thanks for your ideas!

Yes, Japanese Maples do well in containers. Go over to the Japanese maple forum and they can give you suggestions as to which would be best. kdcon

well, it's starting to sound like japanese maples will freeze around here if they are out of ground. What else would you all suggest that may work well?

Pick any evergreen that's hardy from 1-2 zones north of yours. =)
