Hi all,
I planted "apple blossom" mid-summer last year (clearance from Al's Garden Center), it was about 1' - it's grown well, about 8' absolutely drenched with buds ready to pop, but just recently a large portion of the tips of the leaves have turned brown. We had a cold week in Feb and some snow, but my other evergreen armandi is all green - it is more sheltered, tho.
Should I prune hard after bloom? I hope nothing is wrong with the plant, there is at least 500 buds on it - it's going to be spectacular! Whaddya think, just the cold, a bit too exposed?
clematis "apple blossom"
Well, your clematis is fine, it's just from the late cold, will you post a picture of those blooms? apple blossom is really pretty - is yours pink?
or white - sometimes I've heard they are not pink.
Oh, thanks for asking, I will take a picture and post it when the buds open. Yes, it is pink btw
hmm, I planted an apple blossom and it was white - maybe bad labeling..... next time I hope to have better luck.
much love - how did you get your name, redtootsiepop, that makes me hungry for a sweet.
well, thanks for the interest, I was eating a cherry tootsie pop when I first signed up at a website many moons ago and it just stuck I guess.
YOU ARE HYSTERICAL! I've really enjoyed the information and talking with you, maybe sometime we could talk in the canna forum, I'm mad about cannas.
hmm, cannas, well I don't know, you're moving waaaaay too fast for me, I only talk about cannas on maybe the 10th or 11th chat, not this soon, you're pushing me and I feel uncomfortable. I'm going to go stick my hands in a bag of miracle grow potting soil until I feel better errr and maybe even some compost.
oh no, I scared her away ... mmmm and now she's feeling compost......... oh, I've got to make a quick trip to the store for some tootsiepops and run to the greenhouse, I'll be back later.
Tootsie..I hope you don't mind me cutting in on your conversation....LOL..but Clematis "Apple Blossom" is of the Armandii group and is a pruning group 1..which means NO PRUNE...

What zone are you?..These plants are meant from zones 7 and up...if you had a colder period that they usually can take maybe the reason...hope this helps...Jeanne
No prune at all !? I've read I can prune after bloom, as long as I dont go too crazy on the real woody stem. (I'm zone 8) My other armandii is a bit more protected and has no brown leaves. Thanks Jeanne, I see one of the blooms open this morning.... I'm still tempted to prune, even after your very strict "NO PRUNE" it reminded me of the soup nazi "NO SOUP FOR YOU!" (very refreshing after talking with myself) have a great day !! :)
Ok what other clematis are in the armandii group? I like the idea of no pruning.
I like your attitude Marie ; unfortunately I only know of apple blossom and snowdrift. I bet Jeanne from Texas will have some ideas, she's a clematis Queen !

Jeanne, thank you, you really do know your stuff. I will only prune a bit to get rid of the discolored leaves, thanks again!
Thank you for that list Jeanne. I will check these out and see what I can add to my fall "I need list"
