Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

I wish I was able to send you some QLD. seed .
But there is a total ban .

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

I know....I just hate that too! Thanks for the thought!

Greenwich, OH

Doesn"t look like poppies.I always sow my poppy seeds direct with no mulch in the soil.

ginger... what is the deal on the ban.. you are not allowed to mail out anything? Why? Just wondering. I have also sewn some poppy seeds and am hoping to see some growth soon. Temps have been sooo high.. in the high 70's but today is wet and only 54. That picture does look like weeds... I bet I have pulled 100 of those darn things already this year. I have started weeding my neighbors yard because they let weeds go to seed and the way the wind blows.. all the seeds went into my yard. I was constantly pulling. This year if I stay on top of theirs, maybe I won't have so many to fight!

I don't know, the bigger one in the center is definitely a dandylion, but the one in the upper left and the little one just left of the other little dandylion, well, they could be very imature poppy, kinda looks like an annual poppy. I'd probably watch them before taking them out. But the two dandylions would be toast. :)

LhasaLover,
If you don`t have a Licensed nursery or some such thing ,
There is a 3 year jail sentence if you get caught .
Others here at DG have told me thats not true .
I ask every time I go to our Post Office .
Same answer every time.

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

That is a great observation, until your post, I didn't realize they were not all the same...LOL Thanks so much for point that out...I knew when I came in to get the camera, that I thought something "looked" like it was a flower...and then once I got them on the computer, I thought well, gee whiz, those are dandelions..maybe I am not hopeless after all! LOL I will do more checking tomorrow and pull out the dandies!

Brisvegas, Australia(Zone 12b)

We have a saying here in Aus.
If you think it`s a weed , pull on it .
If it comes out easily , IT`S a FLOWER .
If it`s hard to pull out ......IT`S A WEED .
Try it , It works for me .

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

Oh, Kell, that is too true....I will try that tomorrow too...! Thanks!

Glad I could Help .

Centennial, CO(Zone 5b)

the one on the upper left looks a bit like a p. nudicale seedling. What variety were you planting?

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

I have planted several different varieties in this area....can't seem to get any to take...Iceland, Shirley, California, all kinds...I think maybe I keep weeding them in the Spring and that is why I can't grow them...once they start coming up I convince myself they are weeds...I can't seem to get any to grow, and I know that shouldn't be a hard thing to do! LOL

Anyone have any photos or know where there are photos of new seedling poppies? I could be pulling mine as weeds tooo... they look like dandylions too.
.... among other weeds that tend to grow here.

I've received a catalog from this wildflower seed company, but have never ordered. I really like the catalog because they show good pics of the seedlings. They offer several poppy varieties, but the on line pics are really small. The catalog is free upon request, though.

Thank you for the pictures... now, I think I pulled a lot of my seedlings yesterday! Waaaah!!! Am I an idiot or what!!!! Hopefully some more will come up... I did put out a LOT of mixed seeds.

Tammie

... guess I will wait until something starts to bloom before I pull it as a weed. As long as they don't seed, they are no problem. LOL

There are some seedling pics in plant files, here are corn poppies:

Something I could not find was a good pic of the cotyledons. I'll try to get a pic of mine, but its cold and rainy now (although I did just dig all my lilacs up!). The seed leaves are very narrow, almost grassy looking, but in a pair opposite each other. At first glance it looked like green hairs, or stubble.

Tammie, thats a bummer, but there is still a good chance more will sprout. I know I've plowed many under not seeing them.

West Pottsgrove, PA(Zone 6b)

There is a good picture of a P. somniferum seedling on this page
