Rhododendron Hino Crimson

St. John's, NL(Zone 5b)

I bought this evergreen azalea many years ago in BC..it was only in a 4" pot. It barely survived outdoors so I potted it and now keep it in a cold greenhouse. It is currently in full bloom, although it has been blooming sporatically since last November! For those in zone 7, I highly recommend this one.

It was wise to pot it up Todd! I had that one too, it blew away in the wind! So did Madame van Heck, they were both gorgeous. The stems on mine seemed dried out, and blackened on the outsides, they probably needed a more moist spot. Another one I have in the same place is doing well, Purple Splendour, but I grew it from a small plug plant so it's grown more naturally.

I do miss their show, that does well to flower in November, such a long flowering time when it's happy.

Todd,
Are you Tim Boland's brother???? What is the name of your beautiful azalea? kt

Don't know any Tim. The azalea is called 'Hino Crimson'

Todd,
Hino Crimson has been added to my must have list..thank you. Tim Boland is the head honcho of Polly Hill Arboretum which is now being run by Arnold Arboretum. It is easy to say that Tim is brilliant but he is also a very nice guy. Polly Hill has made in her life time many introductions of azalea's if your interested let me know and I will foward more info. Thanks kt

I agree with Todd. Hino Crimson is one of my favorite Kurume Hybrids and one of my favorite reds. The Kurume Group is known for their small foliage and compact growth (2-3 feet) and looks similar to Azalea Gumpo White and Gumpo Pink. Red Ruffles and Hershey Red are similar reds; check them out too. Red Ruffles will repeat bloom some times here in Texas. Finally, Azalea Hino-degiri is another Kurume worth consering. It has a gorgeous color that I describe as... as... bright dark pink perhaps? Something like that. It is very common in nurseries here right now. They all look awesome in groups of 3 or more under my north facing windows! Luis

Todd, Hino-Crimson is one of my favorites! Here's a picture of ours in full bloom last year: http://davesgarden.com/journal/edit/showimage.php?eid=87256. Here's a close up after a rain shower: http://davesgarden.com/journal/edit/showimage.php?eid=86710. The leaves on mine actually turn slightly -- a burgundy color: http://davesgarden.com/journal/edit/showimage.php?eid=79899 .
