Fern ID Please.....

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

I had just put 3 small Bird-Nest Ferns in my basket when I spotted this fern... the leaves are the same color and texture as the Bird-Nest but the ends of the fronds "bush out" and this fern is not as open as a Bird-Nest . I've taken several pictures in hopes of giving you enough visual information.

Any assistance will be appreciated.

Judy

This picture shows the "odd" one on the left and for comparison on the lower right side of the picture, peaking out from under a Carludovica "Jungle Drum" are leaves of a Bird-Nest.

This is relatively immature frond but gives a good visual of the how the end of the frond starts bush out.

This is a front view of the most mature frond on the plant. I was amazed once I got it home and inspected it closer.

This is a side view of the same frond so that you can tell how bushy the end becomes.

Judy,
I am not familiar enough with the type of fern you have. One of my favorite online reference is the Hardy Fern Library: http://hardyfernlibrary.com/ferns/home.cfm They have lots of links that will take you to good sources outside the HFL. I hope this is useful for you since I am not.

The latin name for the birdnest fern is Asplenium nidis. Nidis is latin for birdnest. When I was in the Singapore Botanical Garden in
1969, there was this uge old Banya Tree, with birdnest ferns growing on the branches. It became very clear to me that how that fern got its name. Why wouldnt a bird nest in it. It certainly would not have to start from scratch. Frank
