I am looking for a shorter, smaller hydrangea that can take quite a bit of shade in Louisiana zone 8b. It will be under an oak tree which does get dappled western sun in the afternoon or dappled eastern sun in the morning, depending on which side of the tree I place it on. I had an endless summer planted away from the tree's drip line/shade and its leaves burned in the sun so I am hoping this will be a better spot. Do you think so? I want to plant it with hostas and ferns so it needs to be taller than those but not overpowering.Any suggestions?
Need short, smaller hydrangea suggestions
You may wish to consider Dirr's "Lady in Red" - it is a compact form. In my experience, it needs regular watering, especially the first year in the garden. I just bought gallon size - the three gallon size may be a bit tougher. I don't think any mophead or lacecap can take our afternoon sun. Good gardening.

And 'Blue Danube' is great if you want a tight-growing plant, no long floppy arms, with BIG deep blue mopheads of flowers.
