maple tree shreddings

Floyd, VA(Zone 6b)

Today I waylayed tree workers in the neighborhood who had taken down a hundred year old maple. They brought a truck load of the shredded wood from the branches. The man who delivered it said I should pour lime over the top of the mound and rain would wash it in. When will I be able to use this mulch? Should I put furtilizer on the mound too? Is hardwood mulch good?

I love the slow breakdown of wood chips and when added to the pile some manure you are way ahead. Good soil structure.

I probably wouldn't add lime if I was planning on using the wood chips as mulch. Hardwood mulch is good to use just as it is, on top of the soil.

If you are planning to blend it or dig it into the soil, then you should compost it first.
