Need advice on horn debudding using the caustic acid paste

Casa Grande, AZ(Zone 9b)

A dairy-man/vet told me that caustic acid paste works well on the little nubs of goats (and calves): just shave the nub, put on paste to nub only, hold the little guy for 30 minutes(while you watch the news, he says!) and then rinse the baby's head with cool water and vinegar. Vaseline around the nub will keep the paste from accidentally getting into other skin or eyes. HOWEVER, I've read so many sites that says this is "CRUEL", "PAINFUL", "HEARD SO MANY HORROR STORIES" that I'm afraid to try it. But I am not trained in the use of the electric hot-irons (ring irons) and there is no one close to me (Casa Grande, AZ) to do this 'burning technique' for me.
(Vets will do it for $125 each goat!!! That is cost prohibitive for me.)
I'd like to hear from anyone who has REAL, hands-on experience with the paste. I'm a careful, thorough person and don't want them to be in pain for a long time (Are they in pain for 30-40 minutes until it is washed off? Or if CAREFULLY applied JUST to the nubs, is there less pain there???
HELP!!
