sweet potatos in sandy soil

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Tried sweet potatos once here in my sandy loamy coastal plain soil. Vines looked vigorous, but when I dug for tubers, they were really deep down (compared to white potatos) and not very many found. Is this due to the soil? Are they better on clay, keeping them up closer to the surface?

Nope, Sweet potatoes are not picky, but prefer sand. Sweet potatoes are roots and they do go down into the ground. The drier the conditions of course the deeper they will go in search of water. Irish potatoes are tubers which grow on the vine above the roots. Totally different plant . The sweet potato is a tender perennial with a long season. They are not heavy feeders, so as long as the vines are vigorous they should form nice sweet potatoes given time. In the Baltimore area, they should be set in late May and dug at the first frost (late September-October)

Thanks for theexplanation. We did have some dry years, may have been a factor.
