Hello
I thought your butterfly looked like one someone posted in the bug id forum, so I googled for a picture, and this site came up,' the butterflies of Townsville'... small world!
I think it's a Varied Eggfly, or Hypolimnus bolina, about 2/3 down the page.
Cheers!

Annette, bidens ia a new one for me. Birds do drop some surprises into our gardens, don't they.

We had Monarch butterflies laying eggs on our swan plant. Had lots of them hatch out and it was fascinating to watch their life cycle from egg to caterpillar, to chrysalis to butter fly.

One of the hatchlings landed on this Coreopsis.

When the hatching period was finished the swan plant was just a lot of bare stems but now , two weeks later on, it is again putting out leaves.
