Has anyone grown Peanuts?

Saint Louis, MO(Zone 6a)

Just curious...Anybody grown peanuts? What type? Any tricks to it besides a long growing season? I know it's probably not common but it would be a fun thing for the kids to grow this summer. We have an area that is FULL sun, south exposure, and hot. It's well drained and has been amended for 3 years now. Also, where did you buy them from? I only see Park Seeds as a source right now. SURELY there's more!

Peanuts are about as easy to grow as a long season bean. Culture is similar. In the St. Louis area, I would suggest a Spanish or Valencia Type. These mature in 90- 100 days and should do well. The Virginia type takes 120 + days and are somewhat iffy in mid-America. Runner types are best in the deep south. Some Sources: http://gurneys.com/product.asp?pn=14668&bhcd2=1171418201

I grew peanuts last year... er, sort of. That is, I found a few strange volunteers in the sunny borders of my garden and pulled one out only to realize that it was a peanut plant. I ultimately decided that it must have been planted by the squirrels, just as they do with all the acorns that we have. It looked as though they'd gotten hold of some peanuts in the shell and buried them. It was really fun to watch the plants develop and grow. They couldn't have been easier!

Wow! Thanks Farmerdill.
I took a look at Southern Exposure and saw they offered a peanut that will grow in clay soils.
Ordered it and Hill Country Okra too, why not? It's so pretty.

Not sure if either will do well in my garden but it's worth a try.
My garden = A clearing in the Ozark forest; pull back the leaves and plant seeds or plants.
Water when necessary with a dilute Miracle-Gro.

addicted2plants (and ya'll others, too!), several of us grew out some heirloom peanuts a couple years back. You can most likely get some good info, tips, etc on growing them. If I remember right I even through in a few pics of "before and after" planting/harvesting.

Shoe.

Pssst..., Jeri, I make boiled peanuts about twice a year here. Love 'em!

Thank you Farmerdill and others for the tips and sources! I've got my orders in and a spot reserved in the garden. One site mentioned that plants are heavy calcium feeders and the plants might need to be dusted with gypsum. Has anyone done this? Is it better to actually dust them with gypsum or add it to the soil a month before planting?
