question about cheap plates

Hello, I am new here and really enjoy the beautiful creative stuff you guys do. It has inspired me to try my hand at mosaicing. Only problem is that it seems kind of exspensive for the tiles and glass pieces. Can I use the cheap plates found at the Dollar Tree Stores and Dollar General stores. I mean to break these and use for the mosaicing. I want to make outside items. Thanks for any advice. Billie
