fixing a shredded blanket

It may take me a while to sew, but I just cannot see buying him (Cyn) another blanket this year when he's going to grown out of it. Any tips? I'm thinking of re-inforcing it with jean on the inside because this is where the back belly strap goes. He must've gotten a leg caught. Boy is it messed up!
